Orange Tree Offers A Fresh Take On European Classics With The Launch Of Swoon In India

Orange Tree goes bold with Swoon, unveiling a curated collection that blends European design with Indian craftsmanship, where mid-century European elegance meets contemporary design for a contemporary home.

With the Design Syncretism movement gaining momentum, global design language has seamlessly pervaded India’s contemporary landscape. In championing the spirit of this crusade, Orange Tree, a Jodhpur-based lifestyle brand, transports the UK-born design brand Swoon to India, with an exquisitely curated collection of thirty furniture pieces that reinterpret timeless forms. “India is one of the most design-aware markets in the world, and I am thrilled to bring Swoon’s distinctive aesthetics to a new generation of style-obsessed homes here,” explains Debbie Williamson, Co-founder of Swoon. The launch of Swoon marks a pivotal step in Orange Tree’s mission to bridge global aesthetics with the aspirations of modern Indian interiors.

The Indian Roots

Orange Tree has long championed the vision of introducing international design sensibilities, paired with rich craftsmanship and innovation, to the Indian home. It is the retail arm of Basant – manufacturer of lighting, furniture and decor – designing future-forward and sustainable designs for over 17 countries while preserving its artisanal character. Founded by Vinay Kumar in 1988, the name Basant means spring in Hindi, symbolising renewal, growth, and creativity.

In 2014, ‘Orange Tree’ was envisioned as a continuation of this rich legacy, bringing global design sensibilities to the Indian market and bridging the disparity between craftsmanship and innovation, all while being rooted in sustainability. With pieces crafted from responsibly sourced materials like wood, metal, stone, and natural fibres, the brand endeavoured to mirror global aesthetics with a touch of Indian craftsmanship. From its inception, this lifestyle brand has been a trailblazer in design excellence, earning accolades including Best Design Awards at IHGF Delhi, Gold Grand Stand at Acetech 2019, and Best Booth Awards at IHE Delhi fair, among others.

The Global Inspiration

Similar to its Indian counterpart, Swoon emerged from a desire to make eccentric design more accessible. Founded in 2012 by Debbie Williamson and Brian Harrison in London, the brand redefines how people engage with design, offering bold, vibrant, and meticulously crafted pieces directly to consumers without traditional retail markups. At its core, the brand champions the philosophy of ‘design for the home-obsessed,’ celebrating maximalist interiors and distinctive details. Handcrafted in small batches, the pieces blend mid-century charm with modern flair, where every piece, from a fluted door, an asymmetric handle, to a brass-clad edge, reflects a distinct personality.

An Alliance Between Cultures

This collaboration is rooted in a shared commitment to timeless, ingenious and culturally-aware design. “Partnering with Orange Tree allows us to offer the Swoon experience in a way that feels immediate and relevant,” explains Williamson. In essence, the relationship between Orange Tree and Swoon is a confluence of dual design philosophies: one rooted in Indian artisanal value and functionality, the other in the bold, avant-garde European design. “As the design philosophies of both the brands sync, honouring and redefining heritage with a fresh perspective, this collection is grounded in bold craftsmanship with quiet elegance and everyday functionality,” remarks Gaurav Jain, Founder and Creative Director, Orange Tree. The collection materialises, translating heritage and tradition into contemporary living, the intricacies of form, materiality, and craftsmanship.

Crafted by Swoon’s lead designer, Sam Greig, the collaboration unfolds through three distinct narratives. The ‘Sculptural Statements’ celebrate the rugged beauty of solid wood with a study in form, texture, and balance, inspired by contemporary sculpture. Each piece in this collection finds the perfect balance between resilience and fragility, transforming functionality into creativity. ‘Classics Reimagined’ draws on the precise geometry of mid-century style and the intricacies of classical joinery, reimagining everyday silhouettes through a bold, avant-garde lens. Defined by proportion, detail, and clean line, the collection celebrates a fresh take on heritage.

Finally, ‘Contemporary Icons’ explores the intersection of sculpted form and finer detail, where warm brass accents and high-grade hardware meet crafted forms evoking a sense of quiet luxury. Designed to blend with the nuances of contemporary living, the collection embodies functionality, timeless allure, and an unmistakably iconic presence.

Each piece in this collaboration is steeped in artisanal mastery, carrying tales of serene sojourns and featuring bold forms that evoke nostalgia, while seamlessly inhabiting contemporary urban spaces. “In our journey of shaping interiors that are timeless, contemporary and inspiring, we are elated to present the Swoon collection to our home audience,” shares Jain.  Extending this dialogue of design beyond borders, Orange Tree is set to debut in the UK by the end of the year, cementing its position as a cross-continental design ambassador.
