Peek Into A Symphony Of Arches – A Parabolic Treasure Showcasing Drama and Luxury
Woven together through a fascinating orchestration of elevated ceilings and dramatic archways, lies this Mumbai apartment, a definition of tranquil luxury. “Bathed in natural light with its walls dressed in white stucco and punctured with arched openings, the apartment reflects the personality of its occupants – a family of four have a calm and relaxed demeanor,” say Neesha Alwani and Shruti Jalan, of NS*A Architecture and Interiors. Designed as a safe haven to escape the fast and pacing city life outside, the apartment is an oasis for its occupants, an echo of their individualities.
Flanked by a series of soaring arches on all four sides, an impressive entrance foyer paves the way into the apartment by breaking into a square vestibule, where custom-made fluted consoles adorn the ivory corridor. Juxtaposed with the many ribbed arches of the main door and styled with a handwoven masterpiece from Jaipur Rugs, the anteroom leads into the living area, where floor-to-ceiling glass windows filter in substantial amounts of sunlight. Sheer curtains offer a certain amount of fluidity to the neutrally-toned space here, which adds to the overall comforting aesthetic. A watercolor and ink on paper by Rewati Shahani complements the simple and modern furniture. Styled by Samir Wadekar with exceptional porcelain pieces from Rewati Shahani and antique stone artifacts from Mahendra Doshi, the living room is a breezy yet striking, art-infused space.
Separated by another wooden console that carries the visual language of the entrance foyer, the dining area is opposed with a prodigious piano, perfectly aligned with a Raj Jariwala classic, an enchanting charcoal, graphite, and ink on paper. The custom-made dining table with its chairs in salmon pink chenille by D’Decor is elegantly placed alongside a fluted wood wall panel, where light wooden sculptural gems by Lochan Uppadhay adorn the stark white textures. Exquisite chandeliers from Terra Trading & Luxerus Lighting further accentuate the space. An interesting feature to note in the overall expression of the apartment here is the dramatization of the arched doorways, through rippled curves and extended elevations in their enclosing panels. The curvature of the archways is also reflected in the furniture here, as a direct mimicry through their rounded edges.
The social spaces of the apartment are connected to its private boudoirs through a striking pattern of Carrara marble flooring, that is imitated throughout the space. In contrast to the bare and ivory aesthetic of the living and dining, the bedrooms are designed in much warmer tones, reflective of their occupant’s individual personalities. The master bedroom is mostly clad in veneer, with tall, bay-looking windows throwing in light onto its auburn surfaces. The seating area, accessorized with another carpet from Jaipur Rugs and soft furnishings from D’Decor, creates a cozy corner for its occupants to unwind and relax.
Similarly, in the case of the kid’s bedrooms, the layouts are designed in accordance with their personalized needs and requirements. “The daughter, being musically and artistically inclined, desired a soft palette of materials and colors. Mint green and coral are the dominating colors in her space. The son’s room interior carries a bold black and white stripe theme,” Alwani and Jalan tell Design Pataki. Both their beds are niched next to the windows, providing impeccable views of the city below. In the daughter’s bedroom, an expansive archway houses her study that pops out through the coral and mint green wall art. An arched vestibule with fluted glass shutters connects it to the son’s room, wherein a stark black and white fluting theme is juxtaposed with plain veneer panels. These respective themes are carried into the bathrooms as well, with a combination of colored tiles cheering up the space.
While talking about the initial conceptualization of the design process, the architects explained that they “instantly thought of creating lofty spaces with arches that were bathed in natural light and created a calm environment. Keeping the walls white added to the ethereal and tranquil quality of the space”. Aptly called by its designers as ‘ A Symphony of Arches’, this enchanting residence is a harmonious interlacing of drama, luxury, and comfort.
