Driven by a desire for tangible change and Inspired by the United National Sustainable Development Goals, the newly opened Museum of Solutions is an experiential space for children. Located at Victoria House in Kamala Mills, Lower Parel Mumbai it aims to inspire children to shape a brighter and more equitable future for everyone.
The museum is a state-of-the-art facility that features an amphitheatre, a recycling centre, a coffee shop in partnership with Subko, a museum store, and a Library of Solutions. It also has four labs for play, discovery, making, and growing, each dedicated to exploring an aspect of learning through tinkering, sensory, and tactile explorations. Moreover, the museum has acquired India’s first Luckey Climber, a 30-foot tall vertical maze for children (above the age of 5) to encourage physical activity and imaginative play.
MuSo’s exhibits and programs explore a variety of topics, including climate change, poverty, inequality, etc., through hands-on, immersive, and playful learning methods. The museum’s founder believes that children don’t need to become adults to be changemakers. Each element at the Museum has been carefully selected and thought through based on a mission to improve the quality and standard of education in India. The museum takes a solution-oriented approach to museum experiences, presenting a critical need for change.
The founder and CEO, Tanvee Jindal Shete shares, “I’ve held on to the belief that learning should be meaningful and fun for all children. So when I decided to establish MuSo, I dreamt of a space where children will be inspired, enabled and empowered to make meaningful change in the world, together.”
The JSW group which is behind the museum, has been actively contributing to the equitable delivery of education in rural India. “We are taking the next step to revolutionise India’s educational landscape by innovating the delivery of learning in our country,” says Mrs Sangita Jindal, Chairperson of the JSW Foundation.
To build on their vision to empower children, they plan to establish the MuSo Changemakers Council. The museum has onboard Michael Peter Edson as the Chief Museum Officer. He brings with him the experience of having co-founded the Museum of the United Nations, U.N. Live and working as the director of Web and New Media Strategy for the Smithsonian Institution.
MuSo has collaborated with partners from around the world to bring home an impressive experience and array of wonderful exhibitions and experiences. In terms of toys, kits, content, and exhibit design, MuSo has collaborated with or features goods from Grumpy Sailor and Huettinger from Germany, TOYI from Turkey, Argyle Design, Rigamajig, Imagination Playground, Make Do, Little Bits, and Luckey Climber from the USA. They have also brought on board Eidos Global from Argentina as a knowledge partner.
For December, MuSo has planned a Christmas tree exhibit titled ‘Letter to Santa’ campaign. Their programming calendar is packed with workshops, a book launch, a Christmas flea market, and movie screenings. In a bid to remain equitable, they offer varied pricing based on different audiences and subsidised pricing for students from every school, including Anganwadis, Government Schools, Municipal Schools, National Open Schools, and Schools for Special Children.
