Heralded as the year’s most anticipated design event, attendees will experience a dazzling array of diverse Indian and international studios at Jio World Garden, right in the bustling epicentre of Mumbai, from November 6-9, 2024. “Mumbai has a tangible, dynamic energy that is proving magnetic to world-renowned brands targeting the Indian market,” Ian Rudge emphasises. Throughout these four significant days, attendees will be able to network with seasoned and upcoming visionaries from all interior product realms like artisanal furniture, luxury kitchens and bathrooms, inspiring workplaces, statement lighting and more.

Caught in the crosshairs of transformation, India’s design landscape shapeshifts ceaselessly between minimalist, modern sensibilities, and undying heritage craftsmanship. Aligned with this spirit of rediscovery and innovation, the UK-based global events company Montgomery Group has augmented their eclectic showcase of exhibitors for Design Mumbai with even more prestigious legacy brands such as Poltrona Frau and de Sede. Spearheaded by its co-founders Ian Rudge, Michael Dynan and Piyush Suri, Design Mumbai espouses a philosophy of handcrafting with love for the next generation of curated interiors in India. Making its debut this year, the event will draw in more than 150 high-calibre industry leaders under one roof with selected access for VIP consumers, priming the runway for enhanced visibility, creative synergy and meaningful business opportunities that transcend geographical boundaries.

A Spotlight On Intercontinental Talent

The featured roundup encapsulates globally renowned design powerhouses such as Naja Utzon Popov and Michael Young. Local pioneers include Ahmedabad-based Andblack Design Studio, turning heads with their curvaceous Loop benches and solid dip tables, Esvee Atelier, Inka Homecrafts and Morii Design whose hand-painted wall art and tapestries are an homage to the glorious tradition of passing down slow living, craft-intensive techniques through generations.

Yearning For Greener, More Conscious Design

In its most recent evaluation, the International Monetary Fund referred to India as the world’s 5th biggest economy, which had worked up to inclusivity and sustainable industry practices. From a design perspective, the priorities have consequently been recalibrated to focus more on a circular economy and an organic, grassroots approach to manufacturing. “In Design Mumbai, we have found a perfect alliance, an ambitious event that comes at the right time for India’s fast-paced, maturing market,” concurred Parminder Pal Singh, the co-founder of LOCO Design — a refined, high-performance atelier from Gurgaon that produces rare accents and furniture.

The Countdown Begins

“India’s creativity, natural capital, vast reservoir of skills and technology, and rich history should be more widely recognised and celebrated,” asserts British designer Tom Dixon. Their diverse array of emerging artists continues to grow in the lead-up to the inaugural edition of Design Mumbai so keep checking their website for an updated list. With networking opportunities, exposure to sophisticated, purpose-driven product development and a curated talks program to inspire the next wave of design students, this exhibition promises to be an industry tool to rival leading international trade shows.
